New Biden plan will let people in Colombia and Guatemala countries apply to legally enter U.S., Canada or Spain 

The Biden administration is ending a Trump-era public health policy known as Title 42 on May 11, which allows the immediate expulsion of undocumented immigrants at the southern border due to COVID-19 concerns. The Biden administration also announced that it plans to open processing centers in Colombia and Guatemala that would allow qualifying migrants to legally enter the United States, Canada or Spain. Officials did not say Thursday how many centers they plan to open, when they will be open, or whether there will be limits on the number of people who can apply.

The Biden administration is has approved sending 1,500 US troops to the border ahead of lifting Title 42, a public health policy used to expel migrants during the COVID-19 pandemic. The move is aimed at helping Border Patrol manage an expected increase in the number of migrants crossing the border once Title 42 is lifted. The U.S. soldiers would come from a variety of active duty Army units and would serve for 90 days in mostly administrative and transport roles to free up law enforcement and Border Patrol, according to two senior U.S. officials familiar with the deliberations.
