Lessons Learned from 25 Years as an Immigration Attorney
I have something to celebrate: November 15, 2021 commemorates the 25th anniversary of me opening my own immigration law practice in New York. In a way, it feels like yesterday when I moved into my first office with my old computer, rolodex, and all of the 90s-era office supplies that have quickly been replaced by laptops and iPhones. On the other hand, I have learned and grown so much in these years, and have countless anecdotes and success stories to show for it. Here are some highlights worth sharing:
Identify Mentors to Learn from the Best: My roots in immigration law run deep. Growing up, I watched my late father work as an immigration attorney in his own practice. I was privileged enough for him to guide me as I followed in his footsteps. While law school taught me practical knowledge, my father taught me what no schooling can: how to work with people, how to run a business, and more. Some of my fondest memories together are going to him for advice during my very first cases. As an established immigration attorney, I continue to seek out and provide advice to young attorneys and peers through networking.
Don’t Be Afraid to Follow Your Passion: Many people don’t know that I began my career in the field of finance after obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in the subject. I was talented and quick on my feet, and, as my boss said, “showed lots of promise.” However, I dreaded the monotony of my work, and I wanted to help people. So I decided to go back to school to study law, which was the best decision I ever made.
Never Stop Learning: I continuously monitor legal journals, court decisions, and traditional news outlets to keep me informed on everything happening in the field of immigration law so that I can best represent my clients.
Advocate Relentlessly: Many clients come to me after failed experiences with other immigration attorneys. They are disappointed, anxious, and sometimes even hopeless that their case will move anywhere through the The USCIS or the Immigration Court. I analyze each case with a fresh perspective and look for creative solutions. Most importantly, I never give up on my clients.
Lead with Compassion: After decades of experience, I have seen just about every kind of immigration law case that comes my way. However, I never put a client into a box with a “one size fits all” approach. Every client has an individual story and a unique reason for pursuing residency or citizenship in the U.S. I lead with compassion in everything that I do.
Thank you to the family, friends, mentors, colleagues, and clients who have continued to support me in my practice.
